I only have a working modem, so I cannot help with the rest.
the file to edit is /etc/isapnp.conf <this works for all PnP devices>
run pnpdump and pipe the input to a file, then edit the file to choose
suitable options.
after which you have to run setserial so that Linux and the modem talk.
This is easier than it seems 15 minutes tops.
1. I reboot after editing isapnp.conf, I am not sure if that is
necessary
2. setserial must be rerun after each reboot
3. the parameters in Linux are usually different from those in Widows,
so unless you are a masochist throw them away
4. to check for available irqs
$ cat /proc/interrupts
and mem resources
$ cat /proc/ioports
5. there is a Modem HOWTO and I have a page on my site detailing how I
did it, but the basic idea is to configure the modem with isapnp
<equivalent to setting the DIPS> then to configure Linux with setserial.
Best of luck
