Are you still getting the blank monitor at some resolutions? If so, I still
wonder if you are not really getting the highest resolution you believe your
monitor can deliver.
You need to check a few things. For some of them, you will need to redirect
the output of "startx" to a file, by invoking it as "startx >xerrors 2>&1"
(or some other file name if you prefer).
First, in the redirected startx output:
a. near the start, there will be a line that read "Configured drivers:".
Send us that line plus the following line. (This is to make sure you are
really running the SVGA server.)
b. further down the output will be a series of lines that follow this
pattern (all on one line):
(**) servername: mode "something": mode clock = something, clock used =
something
Send us all of those lines. (This will tell us what modes the X server found
acceptable to implement.)
c. Shortly below that will be a line that follows this pattern:
(--) servername: virtual resolution = something
Send us that line. (This will tell us if the X server is trying to implement
a larger virtual screen - if it is, we still need to figure out why.)
The above will tell you and us for sure what the X server is actually trying
to do.
Second, in /etc/XF86Config :
a. from section "Monitor", send us the lines for "HorizSync" and "VertRefresh"
b. from section "Screen", for *each* server listed, send us the entry for
"Device" and the entire "Subsection 'Display"".
Third, run the command "which X". Using the path supplied, send us the
output of "ls -l /pathyoufound/X". If this points to X in some other
directory, keep going with this procedure until you find a symlink that
points to something other than /somepath/X .
By going through this step-by-step review, you may discover the problem
yourself. If so, great. If not, your sending us these details may let me or
someone else on the list spot your problem. In any case, good luck.
