Firstly I never encounter the first problem you have and I haven't
tried kaffe.
What you should do is try to add the following line:
export PATH=/opt/jdk117/bin:$PATH
to /etc/profile
Assuming you use bash shell and extract jdk to /opt/jdk117/.
That should work !
