Let me first clear away your second question: you can't run Netscape
successfully after starting up your connection with minicom because minicom
creates a shall connection, not a ppp connection (at least not without
special fiddling, described in the PPP HowTo, but which you don't mention
doing).

The first question isn't as easy to answer. Since the disconnect problem
happens with minicom as well as pppd, it doesn't seem to be a ppp issue.
Could be a problem with the ISP, or one with your modem, or one with the
phone line, or ... well, who knows? To find out, we should take a look at
the log entries for a couple of calls -- one pppd, one minicom. You'll find
these in your default log (usually /var/log/messages) and perhaps in your
debug log (usually /var/log/debug). Be sure you're running pppd with both
the -debug and -kdebug options set, so you get the maximum logging.
