Yes, sure, with an appropriate modem (well, kind of ... I don't think you can connect to AOL, unless Wine will run AOL's client software). Read the PPP HowTo for starters. 2. Can you use Linux to set up a server for an ISP? Again, yes ... I've done it in the past (on a very small scale) and I have a friend who runs a small ISP this way. Again, the PPP HowTo will start you off, although it's not complete enough to get you in business ... but this isn't really a beginner exercise, either. The PPP HowTo is probably on your Linux host (look in /usr/doc somewhere; exact location varies by distribution and version), or can be found at http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/PPP-HOWTO.html .
