_Everyone_ knows how to update the kernel via patch. Instructions are
in /usr/src/linux/README, at least to get from one release to a later
one of the same major version. Patch files usually live in the same dir
with the gar.gz's, with file names of patch-<version>.gz, where version
is the version of the resulting kernel if you apply the patch to the
version just before. I have gotten patches from
ftp://tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/sources/system/v2.[012]/
