The only difference that catches my eye is that the script that works sends
a newline in response to 38400, while the one that doesn't work sends
nothing in response to CONNECT. This makes me wonder if the ISP expects an
initial character to come from the dialing host, perhaps to establish the
bps rate. That's not common here, but I remember when it was.
