I'm going to answer your question another way - I imagine that you and
I are on the same wavelength: $40 is a lot to spend on a single cd that
only gets you an operating system, so you're probably saying to
yourself, "Self, we need to download this thing and avoid all the extra
cost!" You can do that, too, but time isn't your only concern. As a
newbie, you're VERY interested in simplicity, which loading directly
from the cd gives you.
At this point, you're probably saying, "Now why does it sound like he's
telling me I've got to spend more money?" You will, but about 1/4 of
what one of those books cost. Go to www.cheapbytes.com - they're very
legit, even though their prices make you think you ought to call the
Better Business Bureau to check them out first.
Also, don't just get the RH 6.0 cd; if you're gonna pay $5 for
shipping, you might as well get an archive set.
Second point: start at www.linux.org for your info on linux. As far as
critiques of linux go, everyone's biased, and their bias has largely to
do with what they're trying to do with their computer. Linux is for
people who are willing to relinquish a little control of their computer
now to get more than they ever dreamed of when they were on Windoze; if
you keep that in mind, all the criticism, good and bad, makes far more
sense.
But if I were you, I'd go for it: anyone who likes to quote that line
from Tennyson has no business using anything but Linux. ;-)

Yours in the Risen Lord,
Christian Moulton
Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the
tombs bestowing life.
[editor's note:this changes everything!]
