I don't think there is any way to use a cd-rw without scsi support.

I also have the same cd-rw drive, and I have got it working in the end.
Can you be a bit more specific as to what goes wrong when you try?

xcdroast does seem to be a bit broken in that none of the menus seem to
work, but apart from that it works fine here.

Basically, you need to enable ide-scsi, scsi-generic and scsi cdrom
support (any of these can be modules), then make sure that the ide-scsi
support is working before you fire up xcdroast.
