If you want help with the LILO problem, you will really have to be a bit
more specific than saying that it reported "some error". I doubt we can give
you better *general* instructions for how to use LILO than the ones in the
man page and HowTo, which I assume you've already read and tried to follow.

As to the slowness running Netscape, I too would guess memory limitations.
To see for sure, open an xterm window and run "top". See what it shows about
how much memory Netscape is using when it runs and whether the system is
using any swap space (swap space is an area of the disk that gets used as
though it were RAM, and since disk access is MUCH slower than real RAM
access, it slows things down a lot).

If you're using swap regularly, you'll probably need to add memory to
overcome the slowness (or get used to the slowness). It's possible that
you're running some unneeded daemons that can be killed to free up memory,
but that's hard to diagnose remotely ... perhaps your friend can take a look
at the process list and spot unneeded ones.

Not sure what your friend means by "the kernel should be reconfigured
(hacked)". If you compile a kernel customized for your system, it can be a
lot smaller than a stock kernel. But that's a lot of work to put in just to
avoid spending a few bucks on some added memory ... not my call, though.
