If you are messing about with runlevels, I guess you are using xdm.  If
you want to _suspend_ the X session, and use a console, the X only
runlevel usually has a console on tty6, and possibly the other tty's,
that you can switch to with control-alt F6, and switch back with
(usually) alt-F7.
