What you're complaining about is not X Windows, but the window manager
that's running under X Windows, which in your case is fvwm95. Try out
some other window managers until you find one that you like.

 The great advantage to Linux is that you have a choice!
With either Gnome or KDE, you have that "dreaded" main menu, but nothing
says you have to use it! Just put the icons you want on the desktop and
hide the panel! Icons can be folders, programs, urls, etc.

Or you can try WindowMaker for a completely different look and feel. Or
try Enlightenment straight, without Gnome. Or Afterstep, or Blackbox.

Or WindowMaker with KDE, or Blackbox with Gnome, or Afterstep with
TkDesk, or...
