WinModems (or HSP modems for non-US Robotics modems)
are not real modems. They require software to run
them. The problem arises in the fact that the vendors
of these modems will not release the source code for
the drivers. Thus, a Linux driver is next to
impossible to engineer. And noone who has the ability
to make a driver would because they have a real modem.
So the future of HSP modems in Linux is bleak. I
would go ahead and upgrade to another modem. Any
external modem will work and most ISA (non-win modem
of course) should work. So far there aren't any PCI
modems that are compatable, as far as I know. Check
out the documentation. There is a site that I thought
I had bookmarked which gave the heads up on many
modems and their compatability with Linux. Someone
may give it to you but it shouldn't be hard to find.
Good luck.
