You *have* new mail. It's just not held where pine expects to find it.
Chances are, the first few messages will be 'Welcome to Linux' messages.
Read 'man mail'; then next time you log in as root, type 'mail'.
(There probably a way to configure pine to read the mailbox, but I don't
have that information available right now.)
