With your help I've found out that the "problem" was caused by 'pine'. 'pine' seems to keep it's (or at least some) configuration settings in /var/spool/mail/<user>. I think this is weird. Why doesn't it use ~/.pinerc? Anyway, as suggested here I switched to 'elm' and haven't had any problems since :-) -- Maurice Hendrix
