I would advise checking this site
(http://www.quake3arena.com/q3test/linux.html) for compatibility issues
with video cards. The last time I checked id was only supporting 3dfx
video cards for the free test Q3 rpm of This Famous Shootem'up game.

In another arena, Diamond (?) video cards are have supposedly pledged
their support to the Xfree86 project by working to make all their video
cards linux compatible.

Personally, I have two ATI Xpert98 8mb cards. They work pretty good in
their linux boxes, but I have been unable to test them with Q3 because
they are not supported.

In any event, the latest round of Linux distributions seem to have
improved greatly in the video card support arena. I think staying
conservatively shy of the bleeding edge of video card technology is
advisable. Pick something that has been on the market for at least 6
months. Give the hacker time to get it working.
