That's ok, we'll still help you out :)...

all three have replacements that run under Linux, I think... I'm not
familiar with that Windows software so I don't know for sure.

Ah -- a wonderful NNTP reader, and it would be even better if it would run
reliably... there are a *number* of alternatives to use for reading
newsgroups and doing mail. Netscape Communicator is the most popular
among my clients -- though it's probably not the most stable piece of
software in the world. Personally, I use a program called PINE that does
both news and mail -- it's textmode (text mode is the mode that you're
using in DOS) client -- I don't much like graphical interfaces myself,
because of the overhead they take and how inefficient they are -- I can
work much faster on a keyboard interface as opposed to a mouse driven
interface.

I'm not totally sure about that... I have never had a use for a program
like that :). Anyone else here know what that program's best replacement
is?

I _think_ that Linux supports it (the card, that is)... and if you would
tell me the function of the attendant software, I (or someone else) could
help you out with what exactly the replacement would be. My feeling is
that the attendant software is probably totally proprietary, and there may
not be a replacement for it. But, I've never used that card, nor it's
software, so I don't know.

Supported, for the most part... You *will* have to do quite a bit of HOWTO
reading to support the writing process on the CD-RW... the PD-CD is
Panasonic's proprietary media mechanism, isn't it? Does anyone know if
that's supported yet?

I've tried... BTW, you may find my bookmarks page to be of some
interest... there are many well scattered links there (I put them there as
I see them, and I don't alphabetize or otherwise sort them.)
You can find many Linux related things there to hopefully get you
started... and one thing: Freshmeat will be your friend... there are TONS
of software listings for Linux there ;).
