For this change to stick you need to put it in /etc/bashrc. Just modify
the "PS1..." line there and it will take effect after a restart.
Another neat trick, if you want to modify the login prompts (show machine
name, etc.) is to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local. This contains the code that
overwrites the /etc/issue and /etc/issue.net files during every boot.
