Make sure your mouse is linked properly in /dev as;
mouse -> psaux
Make sure gpm is started as;
gpm -t ps/2
and that /etc/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config has;
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "PS/2"
Device "/dev/mouse"
BaudRate 9600
SampleRate 150
Emulate3Buttons
Emulate3Timeout 50
