Richard gave you most of the suggestions you need at this stage. Two
additional ones:

1. Make sure the kernel is finding a PS/2 mouse port. This will be somewhere
in the "dmesg" output, I think.

2. If you run gpm in the way Richard said to, does your mouse work on the
console? If not, the problem is probably not in X.
