There are error messages.  You just don't see them.  Capture stderr to a
file like so:

startx 2>oops

and try if you can make any sense of them, or include them in a letter
and try if we can. :-).

It is good advice too to use xf86config to generate your XF86Config file
rather than the fancier tools if you have trouble.  Ant try to take some
thought about what you are asking of your hardware and software. :-)
