No not frustrated, sometimes a little bit on the quick of the mark side, but
that has no relavance here.

Now what i am about to write "might" have no relavance at all, however i was
at a friends house just a few days ago, for the same reason of this mail.
"X" would not work, i get the impression from the wording of your reply that
you are falling into the same hole my friend was.
He was typing X to startup the xserver, that will result in the problems you
describe, you start X with 'startx' not X, X will start the Xserver not the
window manager, and will leave you with the impression that the system has
frozen, which by the way it will not be if you use that option, hit
ctrl-alt-backspace at the same time, that will kill the server and should
return you to the console mode where you started.

Now all the above is just an assumption, Ray explaned howto capture error
messages to a file, lets wait and see what that file reveals, then Ray, i
and others can help you more.
