startx generally sets the DISPLAY variable.  No doubt my network
security is a bit sloppy, as I have physical control of both sides of
the line, but I can telnet from my mighty 386 to the main system and
start an X server there.  It's not possible to work it from the remote
box, so it's kind of useless, which is what I was trying to say.  I keep
DISPLAY set all the time so I can start X apps from the console if I
like.  For what he wants, he needs an X server on the windose box.  By
host machine, I meant the one he's logged into by telnet.  I guess that
wasn't a masterpiece of technical writing. :-)
