No, assuming you haven't updated your kernel, you are not reading the
documentation wrong. Suse 6.0 comes with kernel 2.0.xx, which does require
a recompile to get a sound card working. Fortunately, you can go to the
suse ftp site and download a newer kernel which does not require that you
recompile. I will be doing this myself in a few days, and it sounds much
easier than recompiling the old one. I may be able to give you more info
after I do this, but since it is my first attempt at kernel updating, you
probably know more about it than I do.
