? kernel does nto find my NIC ?

Howdy, All:

 I'm installing kernel 2.0.37pre10 (slackware-3.9) on a 486dx66 32
Megabytes of RAM,
 filesystems are
/dev/hda8  /    ~300 Megabytes
/dev/hda9  swap   64 Megabytes
/dev/hda10 /usr ~300 Megabytes
 
My NIC is a ne2000 clone at 0x260 irq 12.  I've 'make config' and
answered all prompts
to Y that are shown in the IP-MASQuerade-HOWTO; 'make dep clean zImage
zlilo zdisk'.
My kernel does find the NIC it when it boots.  How can I get my kernel
to find this NIC ?
