Dunno -- I've never seen it running anything but 802.3, but I suppose you
could hack it ... why, though? Even Novell gave up trying to push
non-standard frames. But it doesn't matter in this instance. I can't imagine
any Linux distribution not installing with 802.3, and especially not the
SAME distribution installed by the SAME person on two hosts.

This has puzzled me throughout the exchange. Usually I see it if (a) the NIC
isn't configured or (b) there is no route to the network. This is what led
me to pose my earlier questions about ifconfig and route output. Now we're
left with the weird stuff, as per my last-ditch suggestions earlier.
