        Afaik they are needed to compile program source codes and content the
necessary files to do so.Mostly the source codes are distributed as tar.gz
files, so you have to unpack them and compile. Most of the time there is a
textfile called INSTALL or the README where the necessary steps are
described to compile and install the program. Many times it is done with
three simple commands that have to be executed in the dir with the source code
# ./configure
# make
# make install
(too bad that it is not always as easy as that).

        It is used by many mp3-players, better to say mpg123 IS the player, but
there are grafical frontends available. I'm using Kmp3 as frontend running
on KDE, it looks the same as Winamp from the Windows systems does and works
as well (the Winamp ;) ). I compiled and installed it and since then i have
fun listening to music.
