Please allow me to thank everyone for their help in solving my problems
and non-problems (when on booting the system did a check disk because
a maximal mount count had been reached or exceeded - patience has never
been a long suit of mine). Just incase someone on the list would find a
recap of the solution useful:

1) Insert into /etc/lilo.conf the line:

       append="mem=128M"

Several different points in the file were suggested for this line
to be inserted at and in my case it ended up as the first line not
because someone suggested that point but because the other points
did not seem to work and I just stuck it there. I believe that the
first few attempts did not succeed because I did not perform step 2
   below until the last try.

2) At a command line execute the command lilo. I do not know specifically
what this does but it probably causes some configuration file or files
to be modified. BTW this has to be done explicitly as just re-booting
   does not cut it.

Of course none of this explains why the system did not recognize the
memory in the first place since I am running kernal 2.2.5-15 and have been
told this revision of the kernal should recognize all available memory.
But we will leave this for the linux gods to reflect on :-)

Thanks again...
