weird behavior of startx

Hi all!

        I've found that if I 
        startx -- -bpp 16 from my user logged in, X server doesn't display OK
however, if I login as root, su as my user and then startx -- -bpp 16
server starts fine, 

I'm running a fresh SuSE 6.1 install, anyone can help me with this?
