To see the error of your ways, run the tar again, just exactly as you
did. Now press control-d. If you don't give tar the -f option ir tries
to read from stdin, and it will wait forever for you to type something.
I can't promise you what you downloaded is any good, but a missing -f is
the only way I know to make tar hang.
