Hey! Did you see what Ted Gervais wrote on Aug 4 ?

Okay, first of all you are using the wrong switches, you have...
        c = create
        v = verbose
        z = compress using gzip
        x = extract  (this is the one that's wrong, and I would imagine it
                      would cause an error)
        f = files

Bzip2 is a much better compression program than gzip.  I've even heard it
said that bzip2 is better than rar.  So use this command line...
        tar cvyf filename.tar.bz2 /stuff_you_want_to_archive
