Linux Pilot-xfer

I am starting to  use pilot-xfer in Linux. In the help it says to set the environment 
variable PILOTRATE to a higher speed since the default is 9600. The instructions tell 
me to change this variable in my .bashrc or similar file. I have looked at all 3 
.bashrc files and do not see the PILOTRATE variable. Can someone giive me an idea 
where to find this variable.
