greetings, once again

beyond crashing and burning, there's another thing i've been wondering
about

when i start up x, under my users account, certain term variables are
either ignored, or overridden... for example, the prompt (PS1) is altered
to a mere 'bash$', the LS_OPTIONS --color variables are ignored and it
displays ls in 'plain text', etc... i'm wondering if there's a config file
somewhere that i can edit, so that when i start up, i don't have to make
these adjustments all the time ?

some things, in the case of color, won't change no matter what i do, and
i'm stuck with bolded or plain text... if i force a ls --colors, however,
it _does_ display it correctly... but having to type that in all the time
is a nuissance to say the least, especially when the variables are set so
that it _shud_ do it automatically

i tried looking thru vars, basic setup files, but i cannot find anything
that would explain why it does what it does

i shud mention that when i su in as root, everything does look and behave
like i'd want it to... all the colors in order, a correct prompt, etc etc

anyway, if anyone has some insight... feel free to mail me privately
([EMAIL PROTECTED]), or just send a reply to the list, if it seems
appropriate

thanks,
