Thanks Steve for your advice. I just printed that document and will spend
some time reading it. I should also so, that my upgrade to this new kernel
was a complete NEW START. I downloaded the whole Slackware-4.0 package and
used SETUP to do the install. So, it was a clean start.

And it does work, but not with my port statements such as the slip stuff I
quoted/commented on above.
