It was already suggested to me to try "defaults" for my /cdrom entry in
fstab.  It worked, although I didn't know why.

Your explanation makes sense.  SuSE has the "user" option listed which, by
default, causes "noexec" to be set.

I guess this was the cause of my headaches.
