I'm not sure what the limit is, but I know it's around 500K somewhere.
But you can get under the limit by doing one (or both) of these things:
1) Instead of "make zImage" do "make bzImage". bzip makes a smaller
compressed file.
2) Compile some items as modules instead of into the kernel. Things
like sound cards, network cards and so forth have no need to be in the
monolithic kernel.
