I cannot offer you much help, I, too am *very* new.

I have always had problems with X starting.  I have done a few installs and
X always seem to get sluggish with RH5.2 and 6.0 loading from time to time.

I do know that if you CTRL-ALT-F1 you can see what is going on and then
post the errors back here and see if anyone can help (CTRL-ALT-F7 to get
back to X).
