Compiling the Kernel

I'm compiling the kernel for the 1st time. I've done
make dep
make clean
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install

Have  I missed anything. The thing is, I boot linux off a stiffie  
disk(Don't want to confuse the family with this linux thingie), do I 
have to change the boot disk in anyway and how?
