Starting isapnp does give me no problems--you are correct.  Also, I have
read through the HOWTO--several times before resorting to the list.

Also, as someone else mentioned, the reason I am using isapnp is that my
card is a PnP card.  According to the HOWTO, I therefore need to configure
sound as a module, which I have done.  Everything seems to be kosher, except
for that "sb: dsp reset failed" message during bootup, which I suspect is
the root of my problem, but do not know how to trace down or correct.
