Okay, let me modify this statement a bit... while the installer was running
it _appeared_ to be installing Kernel 2.2.5. Now I'm not so sure. My system
is currently back at RH 5.2, kernel 2.0.36. I thought I'd try to upgrade
just the kernel, using Glint to install the RPM from the CD. My working
kernel shows up in Glint with the package name "kernel 2.0.36-0.7". No
pcmcia, no smp, etc. So on the CD I found the package "kernel 2.2.5-22".
Well, that certainly appears to be the proper package, as all the other
packages have additional info in the filenames (pcmcia, smp, etc.)

Well, to make a long story short, I tried to install this kernel and was
informed "package kernel-2.2.5-22 is for a different architecture ... i686"

Ah-ha. My AMD-K6 needs the i586 version, which for some reason is not
showing up in Glint (I assume Glint is interpreting the "i686" in the
filename as a version # and thinks it's newer than the "i586" file which is
in the same directory on the CD). I wonder if the installer did the same
thing.

I'll try the upgrade again and do what you've suggested here. If that still
doesn't work I may be tempted to just stick with RH 5.2, since it works. Or
maybe try a different distro...

Thanks for the help :)
