You read my mind - that's the next thing I was going to try. I've already
downgraded back to 5.2, so I'll do this tomorrow.

I'll give this a shot too. I also fooled around with xconf, with no better
luck that I've had with Xconfigurator. Of course, the main reason is that I
don't know the brand/model etc of my video card - I have to take
SuperProbe's word about what's in there :)
