Capturing X server -probeonly output

I'm trying to find out what RAMDAC the Mach64 X server reports for my video
card.   When I do

XF86_Mach64 -probeonly > xout

the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds, then is filled with some X
server output stuff (I don't know how much has scrolled off).  File xout is
created, but has file size of 0.  How do I save the program output in a
file?
