I've successfully used NE2000-compatible cards from any number of vendors,
3Com 3c509 and 3c59x (including a Dell motherboard with an on-board NIC that
looks like a 3c59x), and a couple of different HP Ethernet cards. Everybody
I know says to use a card with the Tulip chipset, but I haven't done so myself. 

Look in whatever script sets up your modules (this varies by distribution
and version) to see what your choices are, and select one of them.
