Cable Modem Question

I am really serious about getting a cable modem.  I was looking at the 
system specs last night, and if I wanted to use windows 98 it suggests a 
P166. If I want to use the cable modem with a linux system, can I get away 
with a slower system (maybe even a 486) without losing any performance?
