linux version of safe mode?

I swapped a harddrive running mandrake/KDE into another machine... I wasn't
thinking about it coming up into X automatically, now X just loops
something about can't find screens.  I get that because the wrong xserver
in is there, but I can't get into anything to change runlevel or to
reconfig X, how can I do this?
