What you can do depends on the details of how Mandrake sets its runlevels. I
hope someone else with specific knowledge of this will help, but if not,
here are a couple of things to try.
1. When X is trying to run and failing, see if you can get to a textmode vt
by pressing ALT-F#, where F# is some function key. THe default runlevel may
have some virtual terminals configured as well as X.
2. At the LILO boot prompt, enter "linux single" (change linux to something
else, if you configured LILO to use a different name) and see if it gets you
to a command-line prompt.
I assume that once you have a command-line login option, you know what to do
to reconfigure X. If not, please post a follow-up for that part.
