X errors?

Gurus:

I am anxious to correct any problems that may be occurring with my
implementation of X. I recall logging out of X, and seeing error messages, but I
don't have any details right now.  Can anyone tell me where I might look in my
system log files to see if I get 'normal' messages? 

I do plan to read the HOWTOs: XWindow-User, XFree86,
and XFree86-Video-Timings, but need advice as to where to begin.
