Without a bit more information about how you are trying to set up X, I can
only offer general advice.

1. I don't know what you think it means to "conservatively guess" at vsync
and hsync rates, but you should be able to find this information in the
manual that accompanied your monitor. If not, why not search the Packard
Bell Web site (http://support.packardbell.com/) for this information.

2. You don't say what size the screen is or what the (apparent) dot
resolution of your X display is. So it's hard to give a meaning to "Icons
about 2 inces
accross". But see if pressing the key chord ALT-CRTL-+ changes it, and see
if doing so several times cycles you through to a settign where the virtual
screen is the same size as the physical screen. Unless you deliberately
selected a virtual screen that is larger than the largest real resolution
your equipment will provide, this should get them matched up.

3. If the above methods don't clean things up, try posting again, this time
including the following information:

XFree86 version (I don't recall what comes with RH 5.1)
which X server you are running
which configuration tool you are using (xf86config, XF86Setup,
XConfigurator, something else?) to create XF86Config

It is possible that you will need a newer version of X than comes with RH
5.1 to get things to your liking. If so, you should be able to get a newer
.rpm from the Red Hat ftp archive or one of its mirrors (e.g.,
ftp://metalab.unc.edu/linux/distributions).
