I have been looking into setting up a dial on demand PPP link. I have looked
at the documentation and man pages for the demand option for PPP and the
diald program they both seem to have some pros and cons for instance PPP's
demand option needs you to specify the gateway manually which would not work
with an ISP that would use a dynamic gateway. while I really don't
understand diald very much I will have to take a better look at it but it
seems to be allot more complex than the PPP setup was (actually the PPP
setup was pretty easy after reading the HOWTO!) on sunite I see a patch for
dial on demand

sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/kernel/kernel-2.1.33.dial_on_demand_patch.lsm

is this something that is integrated into kerneld?
also how do those that read the list set up their ISP accounts do you use
AutoDial?

The end result that I hope to achieve is when anyone in the house initiates
a connection to my machine(IP Masq setup and firewall in place already) it
will dial the modem out on the server after 15 minutes of no activity the
link will time out and shut itself off. I would also be able to hang up
instantly with a shortcut to a executable that lies on a samba share on the
linux box that displays a window that says Modem Disconnected The Samba
preexec part is already set up what I am looking for is advise on the
automatic portion.
