Actually it will work. Have another read of pppd's man page
(specifically, ipcp-accept-local ipcp-accept-remote). In your
/etc/ppp/options file you would have...
-------------------------
demand
lock
192.168.123.201:192.168.123.202 # best if these ip's don't exist
hide-password
idle 900 # here's your 15 minute idle
defaultroute
noipdefault
modem
/dev/ttyS1
115200
crtscts
passive
asyncmap 0
name "your-isp-username"
ipcp-accept-local
ipcp-accept-remote
connect "/usr/sbin/chat -v -f /etc/ppp/pppscript"
------------------------

No idea what this is, but it's very old (kernel 2.1.33). My advice is
don't use it. Once pppd is setup properly with demand dialing it is
better and easier than diald.

I have used dial on demand but I prefer to start the login process
manually. Primarily because whenever I was composing email offline
sendmail would cause the ppp link to come up whenever I queued any
mail to be sent later. Ended up being a real drag.

Sounds totally plausible. And not that hard to set up. Good luck
with it. Go with pppd and forget diald.
